Winter Driving

The Haines Highway and Alaska Highway are open and maintained year-round. However, winter driving conditions can cause temporary shut-downs in areas and be difficult at times, esepcially for those not use to what the average Alaskan considers 'normal' winter driving conditions.

Whether you are moving to Alaska or just visiting our winter playground, there are a few things to know ahead of time to be prepared and make your journey as safe as possible.

  • Winter driving conditions can begin by October and last through early May or later in higher elevations.

  • If you do not have 4-wheel drive or at least front-wheel drive, chains may be recommended. Studded tires are also beneficial in icy, slick conditions.

  • Be sure to check Alaska road conditions and Yukon road conditions for road maintenance updates before you travel.

  • The US/Canadian border is 40 miles from downtown Haines. Mile 33 Roadhouse is open year-round (Call for hours of operation 907-767-5510) and is the last gas stop heading north for approximately 110 miles where drivers arrive in Haines Junction, Yukon.

  • As of June 1, 2009, anyone entering the U.S. by air, land, or sea is required to have a valid passport. Currently, the requirements for entering Canada are still set at the levels of photo ID with birth certificate.

  • Crossing in to Canada: The Canadian Border Pleasant Camp office is open 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Alaska Standard Time. Phone 907-767-5540

  • Crossing in to the US: Our US Border office, Dalton Cache, is open 24 hours a day. Phone: 907-767-5511
