The lush river banks and waterways in the pristine setting of Haines cater to fishing interests of all levels. The five species of salmon found in Alaska are also found in Haines: King, Coho, Sockeye, Pink, and Chum. Runs of these salmon varieties occur May through November with a favored fishing spot being along the Chilkoot River. The King Salmon Derby in May and June rewards fortunate anglers with great prizes. In addition to salmon, other popular local fish are the Dolly Varden and cutthroat trout found in Chilkat, Chilkoot, and Mosquito Lake. Halibut is also a local favorite as the meat is light, flaky, and perfect for a good meal. Halibut in the 300 pound range are caught in the Chilkoot Inlet just off the shores of Haines.
If you are not comfortable striking out on your own, take an excursion with a charter boat or have a local outfitter organize your fishing adventures.
Anglers enjoy the entire spectrum of sport fishing in the Haines area, with saltwater fishing for salmon and halibut, and freshwater fishing for dolly varden, cutthroat trout, and arctic grayling.
