The best kept secret of Haines is the fact that it is home to more than 50 local artists. Galleries and gift shops offer a comprehensive array of work by local artists as well as those from other parts of Alaska. There are approximately 20 galleries and gift shops in Haines and there is a good chance you'll see an artisan at work. In an area rich with their culture, the skills of the Tlingits' wood-carving and jewelry-making still flourish. Select stores and galleries in Haines carry these unique, traditional works of art to take home with you as a keepsake of your Haines experience. Located in the historic Fort Seward district. For nearly fifty years. Alaska Indian Arts has been dedicated to keeping alive the forms and traditions of Northwest Coast Art for nearly fifty years. Artists in residence practice totem carving, silverwork, printmaking and also experiment with new forms. Historic artifacts, regalia, and contemporary artwork are displayed.
